How to Install Attic Insulation

Attic insulators Palm City helps keep your home warm and energy efficient. It also protects your family from toxins and airborne allergens.

Insulation comes in two main types: loose-fill and batt. Choose which type is right for your home and your budget.

Blown-in fiberglass insulation is one of the greenest and most affordable choices. It provides a dense barrier against heat loss and can save you money on your utility bills immediately.

It’s a good idea to hire a professional to install attic insulation, because they have the proper equipment and know how to do it properly. They can also avoid mistakes that could damage your insulation or cause serious safety problems.

The first step is to inspect your existing attic insulation for R-value. Grab a tape measure and a flashlight. Look for small gaps around wires, pipes, hoses and other penetrations into the attic. Seal them with fireproof caulk before adding new insulation.

Next, calculate how much loose-fill or batt insulation you need to bring your current R-value up to 38+ and to cover the joists. To do this, hook your tape measure to the furthest point of a wall joist, then measure length-wise to the inside of another joist. Subtract 1/2-inch from that measurement for the width of your batt.

Then, layer your new insulation over the old, making sure to run it perpendicular to the joists. You can use unfaced fiberglass or mineral wool for this. You may want to top the insulation with a piece of plastic or aluminum foil to add an extra layer of protection from moisture and air.
